The inspiring poet, singer and well-known civil rights activist. Maya is a respected spokesperson for black people and women. A best-selling author who worked with Martin Luther King and Malcolm X in the civil right movement in American. She was born in St Louis, at the age of 8 Maya was sexually abused and raped by her mother boyfriend. After this traumatic event Maya became completely mute for 5 years. It was during this time that she developed her love for books and her amazing ability to listen and observe the world around her. She was not defeated by her traumatic early life, instead she went on write “I know why the caged bird sings” the first non-fiction best seller by an African American Woman. She spent her time giving lectures on equality and her beautiful poem “A brave and startling truth” commemorated the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.
Weaved, embroidered and Hand finished in England using the finest British spun yarns. For each jumper purchased we donate 100 school meals to children living in poverty.
