Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland he was initially tutored by his mother. She died of cancer when he was just 9, devastated he was then sent away to boarding school. He became atheist and began to believe in the meaninglessness of life.Years later he won a scholarship to Oxford to study English. After fighting and being injured in WW1 he returned to Oxford to teach. It was there that he met his lifelong friend J.R.R.Tolkien.
After this his writing reflects a world view of hope, joy, liberty, justice and purpose. He believed in the eternal destiny of every human and in their ability to fight against the dark.
