INSPIRED BY - MARY TERESA
The self-less Albanian-Indian Nun and missionary and winner of the Noble Peace Prize. Honoured in the catholic church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
Mary Teresa was born in Skopje, which was then part of the Ottoman empire. She lived briefly in Ireland before moving to Indian where she spent the rest of her life. She was a nun, teaching at a convent school but became increasingly disturbed by the poverty surrounding her in Calcutta. So she took medical training and began her missionary work in the slums in 1948. Initially she had to beg for food and supplies and was tempted to return to the comfort of her covert life however she made a vow “to give wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor”.
In 1950 she founded Missionaries of Charity, a congregation of 4500 nuns active in 133 countries. The congregation manages homes for people dying of HIV/AIDS, Leprosy and Tuberculosis, they also run soup kitchens, orphanages and schools. She has been both admired and criticised but her charity is a lesson to all on what can be achieved when we work together.
