Stories through stitches

All our heritage knitwear is knitted and hand-linked in England.

At Fund, we do not consider our jumpers to be a fashion commodity, but rather an item to be loved and cherished. We invest a great deal of love and care at every stage of our process, from choosing the highest quality, ethically sourced yarns to hand-finishing every piece of knitwear in our Cornish workshop.

Our Yarns

We work with the finest quality cashmere and super-soft lambswool yarns, spun in a traditional Scottish mill on the banks of Loch Leven—a method that is true to the ways of the past. Founded in 1897, the mill was the first to start spinning cashmere fibres by machine, under the visionary leadership of Sir Alan Smith. The loch also has a somewhat notorious history, as the ill-fated Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in the nearby castle.

All our fibres are sourced from small, independent farmers, which means all our wool and cashmere come from ethically reared, free-roaming sheep and goats. Traditionally, farmers collect the fibres by hand-combing, ceremonially, in the springtime. This yields a tiny amount of high-quality fibre. It takes the fibres from three goats to make one FUND cashmere sweater.

Creating heirloom-quality cashmere and lambswool yarn demands care at every stage. We use traditional craftsmanship and natural, sustainable fibres to ensure the longevity of our knitwear—so you can pass it down to future generations.

We are meticulous about quality and triple check every batch of raw fibre for micron, length, whiteness and impurities when it arrives at the mill. Every batch of yarn is uniquely identifiable and traceable from fibre lot to cone of wool.

Using old traditional methods and the soft, pure water from the local loch, the fibres are dyed before the wool is spun. This is a gentle process that gives an incredible richness of colour.

All our dyes are natural and environmentally friendly, so the water can be cleaned and returned to the loch once the dyeing is complete.

It is a time-consuming process, but worth it for the resulting wonderfully high quality and superior softness of the yarns. Today, the loch hosts a world-renowned RSPB nature reserve—a testament to the quality of the water we recycle into it.

The cashmere we use is the only cashmere in the world to be spun, coloured, and crafted in Scotland.

Knitting our Jumpers

Our jumpers are then knitted in our traditional knitwear workshop in England. Each jumper is made from a single thread, so there is no material waste from cutting and seaming. We use a very fine 12-gauge knitting machine, so our knitwear contains almost double the links of a standard woolly jumper. This superior process is time-consuming, but it makes our jumpers super soft, lightweight, and super strong.

Our team of knitting and hand-sewing experts

To create the traditional fisherman’s-style jumper that first inspired us, the collar is then knitted separately—again from a single thread—and hand-stitched and linked. Our knitwear has no seams, so it is less likely to fray, catch, or unravel during washing.

Each jumper is then washed three times to ensure no colour loss occurs. Because we use only 100% natural fibres, our jumpers maintain their shape and density, wash after wash. They are pure wool and cashmere, so they contain no harmful microplastic pollutants. They are also hypoallergenic and antibacterial, meaning less frequent washing is required.

Our Unique Embroidery

In our little Cornish workshop, on the south-west corner of England, we then carefully emblazon each jumper with our unique, hand-finished wool embroidery.

It is very difficult to embroider on fine wool and cashmere. Our embroidery technique is a closely guarded family secret, passed down and cherished. We are sharing stories through stitches, as people have always done—through the traditional arts of embroidery and tapestry work.

We are proud to champion this skilled craft in rebellion against fast, throwaway fashion, which is eroding our traditional needlework heritage and polluting our planet.

The Finishing

When the jumper is complete, we hand-press and steam it, then hand-sew in our woven label, which is also made in England. Every jumper is wrapped in black recycled tissue paper to protect it during postage and is sent either in a recycled plastic postal bag or in our luxury black grosgrain gift box, handmade in Cornwall.

We hope you will love and wear your jumper for years to come—and join our community of eccentrics and FUND enthusiasts.
